"Before She Saw Him" is a painting that has been in my heart for a long time. I wanted to somehow connect my love of flowers with my love of the Savior. I had a picture in my mind of someone picking flowers in a field with a glow around them, but I didn't know who the person was at first. I just knew that they were holy and full of light. As I started painting the figure, the picture became clear and I knew who it was meant to be. The woman in the field was Mary Magdalene.

I love Mary. She was full of faith and showed the kind of devotion to Jesus Christ that I hope to develop throughout my life. I started to wonder what she might have been doing the morning of His resurrection - before she saw Him. I imagine she must have been feeling deep sorrow and grief - that soul-crushing experience of losing someone you love dearly. While I'm not a biblical scholar and don't know what would have really taken place that morning, I began to imagine her collecting beautiful white wildflowers to bring to His tomb. A quiet moment where she soaked in the beauty of the fields around her and felt a little bit of peace.
